As a result of globalisation, the term "Third Culture Kid" was coined to describe the mixed identity children assume, influenced both by their parents' culture and the culture in which they were raised. TCKs often struggle with cultural identity caused by exposure to many cultures. They belong everywhere and nowhere. Through personalised pattern design incorporating the multiple cultures, this project is a way to create material culture tailored to third culture kids. The aim is to allow TCKs to visualise their cultural identity and create a sense of belonging through design.

Patterns for Third Culture Kids

The pattern can be used in any way, on any object for whatever purpose a third culture kid may want. Instead of choosing one product these patterns will go on, third culture kids are free to place their cultural identity on whatever they choose.

  • Kayla Russell

    My mom is Indonesian and my dad is Scottish, but I grew up in Dubai, Malaysia, Vietnam and Azerbaijan because my dad works in the oil and energy industry. I chose to create a scarf with my pattern because traditional fabric is something I have taken away from all the cultures I associate with and it can be used in multiple ways.

  • Sarah Galanis

    I am Greek American and because of my dads job, I grew up in the Netherlands and Mexico. I wanted my pattern to be on something I realy connected with the idea of home and for me that is smell. Having my pattern on a candle scented of Orange, Clove and Cinnamon to remind me of home.

  • Neo Sarraf

    I am half Indian and half Nepalese but grew up in Hong Kong. The rugs I have in my home growing up are traditional Tibetan rugs and that is why I wanted my cultural pattern to be on a rug that can decorate my own home wherever I go.

  • Mariah Chuan

    Taiwan, Singapore and Dubai (UAE) are the places that I call home. I wanted my pattern to be as close to wherever I call home next and that is why I have my pattern on a keychain for my house keys.

    I am Moroccan and Saudi but I grew up in London, so my home would be London but my family live elsewhere. I chose to print my pattern on a bag because I love to shop, especially being from London that has so many cultures present in the city, I can represent my cultural identity out on the streets of London.

  • Axel Okoro

    I am Swedish Nigerian and had the pleasure of growing up in India and Saudi Arabia as my father worked as a medical specialist. I had my pattern on something that is a part of my home interior and able to share with others that come into my home.
